Inabaknon New Testament (ABXWBT)
Overview
The Inabaknon New Testament, titled I Baha’o Kasuratan, was published in 1996 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc. [1] Inabaknon (also known as Abaknon, Capuleño, or Capul Sinama) is a Sama-Bajaw language of the Malayo-Polynesian family, and is distinct from the Visayan languages spoken elsewhere in Eastern Visayas; it is notable as the only Sama language that did not have major Arabic influence via Islam. [2][3] The language is spoken almost exclusively on the Island Municipality of Capul in Northern Samar Province, making it the only town in the province whose native language is not Waray. [2] The translation was the work of Marc and Suzanne Jacobson, who arrived in the Philippines in 1978 as Bible translators for the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) in service to the Abaknon people of Capul. [4] Their ministry among the Abaknon spanned over 40 years, during which an estimated 30,000 people received literacy training in their own language. [4] In semi-retirement, the Jacobsons continued to support Old Testament translation and community development through the Inabaknon Heritage Society (IHS), a local nonprofit pursuing discipleship and literacy programs for Abaknon students. [4] The municipality of Capul also maintains an Inabaknon language and heritage center housing copies of the Bible and other materials in the native tongue. [5]
