The Biak New Testament (BHWLAI)
Overview
The Biak New Testament (1990) is the first translation of the New Testament into the Biak language, published by the Indonesian Bible Society (Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia). [1] Biak is a major Austronesian language spoken on Biak and Numfor islands and numerous smaller islands in the Schouten Islands group within Cenderawasih Bay, off the northern coast of Papua, Indonesia. [2] The language serves as a regional lingua franca in the area. Although this 1990 translation has been described as difficult to read, it remains an important resource as the only published Biak New Testament. [2] Efforts to promote Biak language use continue through local radio broadcasting and church services conducted in the language. [2]
