Batak Simalungun Formal Version 2007 (BTSLAI)
Overview
The Batak Simalungun Bible (Bibel) was published by the Indonesian Bible Society (Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia). The Simalungun Batak are one of the sub-ethnic groups of the Batak peoples, found mainly in Simalungun Regency and surrounding areas of North Sumatra. [1] Bible translation into Simalungun has deep historical roots: the first translation of the Bible into an indigenous Indonesian language was undertaken by Wismar Djaulung Saragih Sumbayak (1888-1968), who had been baptized by German missionary August Theis in 1910. [1] Theis, who arrived in the Simalungun region on 2 September 1903, initially conducted mission work in the Toba Batak language, but the Simalungun people’s difficulty understanding Toba underscored the need for Scripture in their own language. [1] Wismar Saragih also authored the first Simalungun dictionary and successfully campaigned for the use of the Simalungun language in schools rather than Toba. [1]
Language and People
Batak Simalungun (ISO 639-3: bts) is spoken by approximately 1,200,000 people in North Sumatra, Indonesia, primarily in Simalungun Regency and neighboring areas. [1] The Simalungun people have their own distinct language, closely related to but different from Toba Batak. The Simalungun Protestant Christian Church (GKPS), which grew out of the early missionary work, is the principal church of the community. [2] Indonesia, Sumatra. [Glottolog: bata1288]
