Chorti Bible (CAAWBT)
Overview
The Chorti Bible (Uyojroner e Dios xeꞌ Tzꞌijbꞌabꞌir Tama e Onian Tiempo) contains the New Testament together with Old Testament portions including Genesis, Ruth, Esther, and Jonah, and is the first complete scripture publication in the Chortí language, with the New Testament copyrighted in 1996 by Wycliffe Bible Translators and the Old Testament portions by Evangel Bible Translators International in 2013. [1] The New Testament was translated by John and Diana Lubeck of Evangel Bible Translators International, who lived among the Chortí people for over 37 years; the completed New Testament was dedicated in 1997 after 24 years of translation work. [4] The Old Testament translation was carried out with the assistance of Wilian and Olga Ramírez, Chortí mother-tongue translators. [4] Chortí is a Mayan language spoken primarily in the Chiquimula department of eastern Guatemala, around the towns of Jocotán and Camotán, and in adjacent areas of western Honduras near the Copán ruins. [2] The language is classified as endangered, with an estimated 16,700 speakers in Guatemala and around 4,200 in Honduras; dominance of Spanish in education has accelerated language shift among younger generations. [3]
