Overview

The Chol Tumbala Bible is a 1977 New Testament translation in the Tumbala dialect of Ch’ol, a Mayan language spoken in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. [1] Ch’ol belongs to the Cholan branch of the Mayan language family and has two principal dialects: Tumbala (eastern) and Tila (western), which are largely mutually intelligible. [2] The translation was produced by Wycliffe Bible Translators and published by Liga Biblica Internacional. The vernacular title is “I T’an Dios” (The Word of God). Ch’ol speakers in the Tumbala region are concentrated in the municipalities of Tumbala, Sabanilla, and surrounding areas of northern Chiapas. [2]
