Romanized Yupik New Testament (ESSWBTR)

Overview

The Romanized Yupik New Testament is a translation of the New Testament into Central Siberian Yupik using the Latin (Roman) script, intended primarily for the Yupik community on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska. [1] St. Lawrence Island, located approximately 150 miles off the coast of mainland Alaska, has been home to the Yupik people for over 2,000 years, with communities in the villages of Gambell and Savoonga. [1] The translation project was carried out by Wycliffe Bible Translators and spanned nearly 60 years. In 1959, linguists David and Mitzi Shinen were sent by Wycliffe to Gambell, where they spent years learning the language before beginning translation work. [1] [2] A separate Cyrillic-script edition was also planned to serve Yupik speakers in Siberia, who use the Russian Cyrillic alphabet for their written language. [2] The completed New Testament represents a major milestone for one of the smallest language communities to receive a full New Testament translation.
