Fore New Testament

Fore New Testament (FORNYB)

Overview

The Fore New Testament (Mono Agowe) was first published in 1974 by the New York Bible Society (now Biblica), translated by Wycliffe Bible Translators working among the Fore people of Papua New Guinea’s Eastern Highlands Province. [1] The Fore are a community of approximately 20,000 people living in the Okapa District, divided by the Wanevinti Mountains into North Fore and South Fore groups. [2] The Fore became internationally known in medical history as the population affected by kuru, a fatal prion disease transmitted through ritualistic endocannibalism as part of mourning practices. Kuru was first reported to Western medicine in 1957 by Daniel Carleton Gajdusek and Vincent Zigas, and approximately 2,700 people died from the disease between 1957 and 2005. [3] The practice of endocannibalism was largely abandoned by 1960 following intervention by Australian administrators. [3] The printed Fore New Testament has been out of print for decades, and the Fore community has requested a revision and reprint through Tyndale Bible Translators. [4]
