Ipili New Testament (IPILBT)
Overview
The Ipili Nutestamene is a New Testament translation in the Ipili language, an Engan language of the East New Guinea Highlands spoken by approximately 26,000 people in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea. [1] The translation was primarily guided by Terrance (Terry) Borchard, a missionary with Lutheran Bible Translators (LBT) who began working among the Ipili people in the Paiela area in 1969. [2] Borchard, who held a Master of Divinity from Concordia Seminary (St. Louis) and a Master of Linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington, became fluent in Ipili and worked with local speakers to develop a written form of the language and translate the New Testament into the Paiela dialect. [2] The Ipili New Testament was dedicated and launched in Porgera and published by the Bible Society of Papua New Guinea in 2008. [3] Borchard continued translation work on portions of the Old Testament until his death from multiple myeloma on August 10, 2014, at age 72. [2] The Ipili language has two main dialects: Porgera-Paiela and Tipinini. [1]
