Irigwe 2012 Edition (IRIWYI)
Overview
The Irigwe (Rigwe) New Testament was published in 2012 by the Nigeria Bible Translation Trust and Wycliffe Bible Translators. The Irigwe people live primarily in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria, centered around the town of Miango southwest of Jos. Missionary activity among the Irigwe began in 1913 with the arrival of Sudan Interior Mission (SIM) personnel, who established a permanent station at Miango and initiated Bible translation and literacy work. [1] Work on writing the Rigwe language began as early as 1919, with early vernacular publications including nine New Testament books and an Irigwe Catechism in 1935, followed by an Irigwe Hymnbook and alphabet chart in 1986. [1] The orthography was standardized in the 2006 publication “Reading and Writing Irigwe,” a product of the Irigwe Language and Bible Translation Project. [1] The 2012 New Testament represents the culmination of decades of linguistic and translation work in the language.
