New Testament in Kono (Sierra Leone) (KNOBSL)
Overview
The first New Testament in the Kono language of Sierra Leone, published in 2006 by the Bible Society of Sierra Leone and launched in 2008. [1] Kono is a Mande language spoken primarily in the Kono District of eastern Sierra Leone. The translation, titled Yataa ‘a Dobenee Nama, marked the first time Kono speakers had access to the Scriptures in their mother tongue. [2] Following the NT publication, Old Testament translation began in 2011 under the Bible Society of Sierra Leone and partner agencies. [1] A grassroots literacy movement emerged after the NT launch, with locally-led programs that combine Scripture engagement with reading instruction. [3] Lutheran Bible Translators has supported ongoing Kono Scripture engagement efforts, including literacy workshops for the Kono-speaking community. [3]
