Overview

The Konso 2001 Edition is a New Testament translation in the Konso language, published by the Bible Society of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa. [1] Konso is a Lowland East Cushitic language spoken by approximately 200,000-250,000 people in southwestern Ethiopia. [2] The Konso people are renowned for their stone-walled terraced hillside villages, which were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 for their outstanding example of a living cultural tradition. [3] Bible translation work in the Konso language has been supported by the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus South West Synod, which has maintained active translation programs in the region since 1990. [4] The Mekane Yesus church has a substantial presence among the Konso, with over 85,000 members across more than 100 congregations. [5]

The Konso (also known as Konsita) are a Lowland East Cushitic people inhabiting the Konso special woreda in south-central Ethiopia. [2] Their language belongs to the Afro-Asiatic family and is related to other Cushitic languages of the region. The Konso are recognized for their distinctive cultural landscape of dry stone terraces used for agriculture in the hilly terrain. [3]
