Kyaka Enga Bible (KYCPNG)

Overview

The Kyaka Enga Bible, titled “Buku Baepole” (The Shorter Bible), contains the complete New Testament and selected portions of the Old Testament in the Kyaka Enga language of Papua New Guinea. The New Testament was first published in 1973 by the Bible Society of Papua New Guinea, with additional portions copyrighted in 1980 and 1987. [1] The translation work was carried out through Baptist mission activity in the Western Highlands during the early 1970s, and was later adapted to the Sau dialect of Enga and published in 1979. [2] Kyaka is a distinctive dialect of the Enga language, which is the largest language of Papua New Guinea. [3] Linguistic work among the Kyaka people was documented by Norm and Sheila Draper, who compiled the first comprehensive Kyaka-Enga dictionary during their years of residence among the community. [3]

Language and People

Kyaka (ISO 639-3: kyc) is spoken by approximately 12,000 people in Papua New Guinea, Map 6. [Glottolog: kyak1244]

Kyaka is spoken in the Baiyer River valley and Lumusa Plateau areas northwest of Mount Hagen in Western Highlands Province. [3] Although classified as a dialect of Enga, Kyaka is highly distinctive and not always mutually intelligible with other Enga varieties. The broader Enga language group has close to 200,000 speakers, making it the largest language in Papua New Guinea. [3]
