Western Lawa Bible

Western Lawa Bible (LCPWBT)

Overview

Digitization of Western Lawa Print Bible. The Western Lawa (also known as Lawa) are a Mon-Khmer ethnic group living in the Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son provinces of northern Thailand, with approximately 9,100 speakers [1]. The first Christian work among the Western Lawa began in the 1920s when American Baptist missionary William Young introduced Christianity through compassionate service [1]. Bible portions in Western Lawa were first produced between 1961 and 1967, followed by a New Testament completed between 1971 and 1983 [1]. The complete Lawa Bible, including the Old Testament, was published in 2001 by the Thailand Bible Society [1][2]. The orthography used for the translation is based on the Western Lawa variety spoken in Ban La-up and is written in the Thai script; this writing system is used widely, especially among Christians [3]. The 2018 digital edition distributed by Wycliffe Bible Translators represents a digitization of this print Bible for online and mobile access [4].
