The New Testament in Moru

The New Testament in Moru (MGDBSS)

Overview

The New Testament in the Moru language of South Sudan, published in 1996 by the Bible Society of Sudan. Moru is a Central Sudanic language of the Moru-Madi subgroup within the Nilo-Saharan family, spoken by the Moru people primarily in the Amadi and Mundri areas of Western Equatoria. [1] Christian mission work among the Moru began in the early twentieth century; the Church Missionary Society (CMS) was active in southern Sudan from around 1920, and Catholic missionaries had earlier produced vocabularies and grammars of Moru. [2] The New Testament and Psalms, titled “Taobaro To’di,” was first published in 1951. [1] The Moru language has been maintained in large part through its use in worship by the Episcopal Church of the Sudan. [1] A complete Moru Bible, “Baibolo Alokado,” including both Old and New Testaments, was later published by the Bible Society in Sudan in 1999. [3]
