Mokilese Bible

Mokilese Bible (MKJMBTC)

Overview

The Mokilese Bible is a draft translation containing portions of Scripture (Matthew and Mark) in the Mokilese language (also known as Mwoakilloa), published in 2019 by the Mokilese Bible Translation Committee. [1] Mokilese is closely related to Pohnpeian but is considered a distinct language, spoken by approximately 1,000 people originating from Mokil Atoll in the Caroline Islands of the Federated States of Micronesia. [2] The translation project began in March 2011 after community leaders decided to pursue Scripture in their own language, motivated by the fact that church services were conducted almost entirely in Mokilese but Scripture readings had to be done in Pohnpeian since no Mokilese translation existed. [2] A first draft of the New Testament was completed in June 2015, with Peter and Robin Knapp of Isles of the Sea serving as translation advisors.
