Malagasy Protestant Version (MLGDPV)

Overview

The Malagasy Protestant Version (Baiboly Protestanta) is a landmark Bible translation in the Malagasy language of Madagascar. The original translation was completed in 1835, making it one of the first complete Bibles printed in an African language. [1] The work was begun by Welsh missionaries David Jones and David Griffiths of the London Missionary Society (LMS), who arrived in Madagascar in the early 1820s at the invitation of King Radama I. Jones worked on Genesis and Matthew while Griffiths translated Exodus and Luke, using the original Hebrew and Greek texts rather than translating from English alone. [2] Translation began on 10 September 1823, and the entire Bible was printed by June 1835. [1] The text underwent a major revision by Griffiths between 1850 and 1855, and a further revision was published in 1865-1866. [3] A subsequent revision to standardize Malagasy orthography was completed in 1908-1909, producing the version accepted by the Protestant churches of Madagascar. [4] The 1965 edition, published by the Bible Society of Madagascar, incorporated minor corrections and is the basis of this digital text. [4]
