The Old Moro Version (MORBSS)

Overview

The Old Moro Version is the New Testament in the Moro language, a Kordofanian language of the Nuba Mountains in South Kordofan, Sudan. Missionaries developed a Latin-script orthography for Moro in 1936, laying the groundwork for Scripture translation. [1] The first edition of the Moro New Testament was published in 1965 by the Bible Society in Sudan, translated in the Ləŋorəban dialect. [1] A revised edition followed in 1993. [1] The arrival of the New Testament was a significant catalyst for literacy among the Moro people, as Christian literacy became a key element in the community’s ethnic identity and social organization. [2] Most Moro Nuba practice a syncretic form of Christianity that was introduced by British-sponsored missionaries, and the Church Missionary Society maintained a presence in the Nuba Mountains from the 1940s onward. [3]
