Tatahuicapan Nahuatl Bible (NHXWBTT)

Overview

The NHXWBTT is a New Testament translation in the Tatahuicapan variety of Isthmus Nahuatl, published in 2016 by Wycliffe Bible Translators [1][2]. Isthmus Nahuatl encompasses two closely related speech communities — Mecayapan and Tatahuicapan — located in the municipalities of the same names in the state of Veracruz, in the northern part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec [3]. This variant is one of the more divergent forms of Nahuatl, and its closest linguistic neighbor is the Pajapan variety; together they have historically been called Isthmus Nahuatl [3]. Speakers refer to their language as either “Mejicano” or “mela’tajtol” (from “melac” meaning “straight, right, true” and “tajtol” meaning “word”) [3]. Language and People

Isthmus-Mecayapan Nahuatl (ISO 639-3: nhx) is spoken by approximately 26,600 people across the municipalities of Mecayapan and Tatahuicapan de Juárez in Veracruz, eastern central Mexico [3]. The language is notable for several distinctive linguistic features, including the use of “t” instead of “tl,” the presence of voiced stops (b, d, g) unusual for Nahuatl, and a distinction between inclusive and exclusive first-person plural forms [3].
