Modern Nyiha New Testament

Modern Nyiha New Testament (NIHWBT)

Overview

The NIHWBT is a New Testament translation in the Nyiha language (Kinyiha) of western Tanzania. Translation work began in earnest around 2007, and the completed New Testament was officially launched on 13 May 2023 in the village of Igamba [1][2]. The translation was carried out by a team including Wilhelm Mwakavanga (a Nyiha pastor and translator) and Kassim Mwashilindi, under the project leadership of Richard Yalonde, who oversaw multiple Tanzanian language translation initiatives [1]. The project was supported by Wycliffe Bible Translators and the Bible Society of Tanzania [2]. In addition to the printed New Testament, the project team produced an audio New Testament, a Nyiha songbook, and a translated version of the Jesus Messiah comic book [1]. A Nyiha dictionary is in progress, and plans have been made to begin translating the Old Testament [1]. The launch celebration in Igamba was marked by enthusiastic community participation, with the local Nyiha chief offering double the announced price for copies and pledging support for future Old Testament translation [1].
