Today’s Dayak Ngaju Bible (NIJLAI)

Overview

Today’s Dayak Ngaju Bible (Surat Barasih Barita Bahalap) is a New Testament translation in the Ngaju Dayak language, published by the Indonesian Bible Society (Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia, LAI) in 2005, based on a 1999 translation. [1] Ngaju Dayak has a significant history of Bible translation: the first New Testament in Ngaju was completed in 1846 by German missionaries J. F. Becker and A. F. A. Hardeland, with review assistance from Timotheus Marat and Nikodemus Tomonggong, making it the first Bible translation into any language of Kalimantan (Borneo). [2] The Old Testament followed in 1858. [2] The modern LAI edition represents a fresh translation into contemporary Ngaju for today’s readers.

Translation History

The earliest Ngaju Scripture translation dates to the mid-19th century, when Rhenish Mission Society missionaries produced the New Testament (1846) and Old Testament (1858). [2] The Indonesian Bible Society undertook a new translation in the late 20th century, completing the modern Ngaju New Testament in 1999 and publishing a revised edition in 2005. [1] LAI has also produced translations in related Kalimantan languages, including Ot Danum (NT 1997) and Ma’anyan (NT 1996). [2]
