Nogai New Testament, Genesis, Ruth, Ester, and Jonah (NOGIBT)
Overview
The Nogai New Testament with selected Old Testament books was published by the Institute for Bible Translation (IBT). The New Testament (Injil) was completed in 2011, while the Old Testament portions — Genesis, Ruth, Esther, and Jonah — were published separately (Ruth, Esther, and Jonah in 2005; Genesis in 2016) and are included in this combined edition. [1] The selection of these particular Old Testament books reflects IBT’s common practice of publishing short, narrative-driven OT books (Ruth, Esther, Jonah) as accessible introductions to the Old Testament, followed by Genesis as the foundational book of the Pentateuch. IBT has since continued Nogai OT translation, publishing Proverbs in 2017 and the complete Pentateuch in 2023. [1] The Nogai belong to the Kypchak group of Turkic peoples and are settled across the North Caucasus (Dagestan, Stavropol, Karachay-Cherkessia, Chechnya) and the southern Volga region. The modern Nogai translation came almost 200 years after the Pentateuch was first published in Nogai in the early 19th century. [1]
