Nyankole Bible (Runyankore) (NYNBSU)
Overview
The Nyankole Bible (Baibuli Erikwera) is a New Testament in the Runyankore-Rukiga language, published by the Bible Society of Uganda in 1989. [1] Runyankore and Rukiga are closely related and mutually intelligible Bantu languages of western Uganda, often treated as a single literary language. [2] Bible translation into Runyankore-Rukiga was initiated by Dr. Stanley Smith of the Church Missionary Society (CMS), with some Scripture sections first translated in 1957. [3] The first complete Runyankore-Rukiga New Testament was published in 1977, and the full Bible (Baibuli Erikwera) followed in 1989. [3] The translation process was not without difficulty: during the 1970s, President Idi Amin reportedly prevented leaders of the Seventh Day Adventist Church from participating in the signing of the translated version, on the grounds that only Catholic, Anglican, and Islamic faiths were officially recognized.
