Pohnpeian NT & Psalms and Joshua (Old Alphabet) (PONOLD)
Overview
The New Testament and Psalms in the Pohnpeian language of the Federated States of Micronesia. This public domain edition preserves the old orthography used by early missionaries of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM). The Ponape mission was established in 1852 by Rev. Albert A. Sturges and Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick, who sailed from Boston aboard the Snow Squall. [1] Edward T. Doane arrived at Ponape on February 6, 1855, and worked there until 1873, contributing to Scripture translation and literacy efforts. [2] The missionaries produced printed translations of individual Gospels and a Ponapeian Primer during this period. [1] The year 1822 listed for this edition likely reflects a metadata convention rather than an actual publication date, as the earliest Pohnpeian Scripture portions date from the 1860s-1870s, with the Book of Joshua published in 1882. [3] A modern Pohnpeian Bible using a new alphabet was published in 2006 by the Bibelsigun Saunenengan Pohnpei (Pohnpeian Bible Society). [4]
