Overview

The Cusco Quechua 2011 Edition is a New Testament translated by Bibles International to address the need for a clearer Quechua Scripture. Quechua pastors had found the existing Cusco Quechua translation difficult to understand, citing long, nearly undecipherable sentences. [1] The primary translator was Modesto Punal, and the project took 14 years to complete. [1] A trial edition of Mark, James, and 1, 2, 3 John was dedicated in November 1998, and the full New Testament was completed in 2011 with an official dedication in January 2012. [1] Lourdes Sierra, wife of the main translator, led literacy programs teaching Quechua women to read, and the team published a pre-primer and teacher’s manual in 1997 and an Old Testament Storybook in 2002. [1] In 2019, Quechua church leaders in Urubamba voted overwhelmingly to revise this New Testament and begin Old Testament translation. [1]
