Overview
The Sampang 2008 Edition is a New Testament translation into Sampang, a Sino-Tibetan language spoken by the Sampang Rai people of eastern Nepal. Published in 2008, this translation provides the 27 books of the New Testament to a small community of approximately 18,300 speakers. [1] The Sampang are a subgroup of the Rai people, who belong to the Central Kiranti ethnic cluster and are part of the indigenous Kirat peoples of the Himalayan mid-hills. [2] Historically, the Sampang trace their roots to ancient Kiranti tribes known for warrior traditions and a deep connection to the land. [2] The predominant religions among the Sampang are Buddhism (approximately 43%) and Hinduism (approximately 18%), with Christianity having made very limited inroads into the community. [3]
