Suau Bible (SWPPNG)
Overview
The New Testament and portions of the Old Testament in the Suau language of Papua New Guinea. Suau served as a missionary lingua franca across much of southeastern Papua New Guinea’s Milne Bay Province, beginning with the arrival of the London Missionary Society (LMS) in the late nineteenth century. Charles Abel (1862-1930) established the Kwato mission station in 1891 and adopted Suau as the language of instruction and worship, a pragmatic choice given its wide use as a trade language across the islands of the region. [1] Early Suau-language religious texts, including portions of the Book of Common Prayer, appeared as early as 1895. [2] The present translation, published in 1998 by the Bible Society of Papua New Guinea, includes the complete New Testament and selected Old Testament books, continuing a tradition of Suau Scripture that spans more than a century.
