Takia New Testament (TBCPNG)
Overview
The New Testament in the Takia language of Papua New Guinea, published in 1999 by the Bible Society of Papua New Guinea in cooperation with Wycliffe Bible Translators. Takia is an Oceanic Austronesian language spoken primarily on Karkar Island and Bagabag Island, as well as in the coastal villages of Megiar and Serang in Madang Province. [1] As a member of the Bel language family, Takia has undergone significant structural influence from Waskia, a neighboring Papuan language on Karkar Island, adopting features such as subject-object-verb word order while retaining its Oceanic morphology. [1] This was the first translation of the New Testament into Takia. The language is under pressure from Tok Pisin and English, making this Scripture translation an important resource for both the Christian community and language preservation on the island. [1]
