Papantla Totonac New Testament (TOPWBT)
Overview
The Papantla Totonac New Testament was published in 1979 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, providing Scripture in a major Totonac variety spoken in the lowland coastal region of Veracruz, Mexico. [1] Papantla Totonac (also known as Lowland Totonac) is spoken by approximately 50,000 to 80,000 people in and around the city of Papantla and neighboring communities along the Gulf Coast of Veracruz, including El Escolín, Cazones, Tajín, and Espinal. [2] The translation was part of SIL’s extensive engagement with the Totonacan language family, which began in the 1950s when missionary linguist Herman P. Aschmann started linguistic and translation work among Totonac-speaking communities. [3] [4]
