Toaripi New Testament (TQOFBS)

Overview

The Toaripi New Testament, titled Jesu Keriso ve Evanelia Toaripi Upi, is one of the earliest Scripture translations in Papua New Guinea, with the Gospels first published in 1902 by the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS). [1] The translation was the work of missionaries of the London Missionary Society (LMS), who established stations along the Gulf of Papua beginning in the 1880s. [2] James Chalmers, the pioneering LMS missionary, settled at Motumotu (Toaripi) in the Gulf region after 1888 and laid the groundwork for mission work among the Elema peoples before his death in 1901. [2] The first complete New Testament was produced in 1914 by E. Pryce Jones of the LMS and revised in 1928. [1] A further revision of the New Testament along with Psalms was completed in 1960 by H.A. Brown of the LMS, assisted by Toaripi speakers Marehari Raepa, Forova Hui, and Samuela Koae. [1] Toaripi (also called East Elema) is a Trans-New Guinea language spoken in the Gulf Province of Papua New Guinea.
