Overview

The Inğil Mettanyn tahriri üzre is a transcription of the Gospel of Matthew into Turkish using Roman script, produced by Camilla Ružićka-Ostoić and published in Vienna in 1883. It is considered the first book of the Bible in the Turkish language to be published in Roman script. The text was based on the Gospel of Matthew from the British and Foreign Bible Society and the American Bible Society editions of 1877 and 1878. The volume includes a foreword and pronunciation rules in German and French, as well as a glossary of Turkish words with German translations not found in Ružićka-Ostoić’s main Turkish-German dictionary.

Translators and Contributors

Camilla Ružićka-Ostoić was the holder of the royal imperial Austrian gold medal for science and art, the royal Bavarian gold Ludwig Medal, and the Imperial Persian Order of the First Class for Science. She produced the Türkisch-deutsches Wörterbuch (Turkish-German dictionary) in 1879. The Matthew transcription was commissioned by Rudolf Leohner and self-published by Ružićka-Ostoić through Friedrich Jasper in Vienna.
