Overview

The Nkwa Asem (Word of Life) is a contemporary Asante Twi Bible produced by Biblica (the International Bible Society). [1] The New Testament was first published in 1996, and the complete Bible was released in 2020 after decades of translation work. [1] The translation draws on multiple source texts including the New Living Translation, the New International Version, and the Hebrew and Greek critical editions, aiming for clear, accessible language in contemporary Asante Twi. [1] This translation is distinct from the earlier Twere Kronkron, the formal-equivalence Twi Bible published by the Bible Society of Ghana. [1] Twi Bible translation has deep roots in Ghana: the first complete Twi Bible was published in Basel in 1871 by the German Basel Mission linguist Johann Gottlieb Christaller, working with Ghanaian scholars David Asante, Theophilus Opoku, Jonathan Palmer Bekoe, and Paul Staudt Keteku, using the Akuapem dialect. [2] [3] Christaller’s pioneering linguistic work, including his 1875 Twi grammar and 1881 dictionary, laid the foundation for Akan-language literature. [3]
