The New Testament in Ayautla Mazatec was published in 2009 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc. and represents the first Scripture translation in this language. ^[1] Ayautla Mazatec is one of several distinct Mazatecan languages spoken in the Sierra Mazateca region of northern Oaxaca, Mexico. Although often grouped under a single name “Mazatec,” the Mazatecan varieties are not fully mutually intelligible; Ayautla Mazatec has approximately 80% intelligibility with Huautla Mazatec, the prestige variety. ^[2] A writing system for Ayautla Mazatec was developed with the assistance of SIL linguists Cynthia and Larry Williams. ^[3] The translation is available in print, digital, and audio formats.

Language and People

Ayautla Mazatec (ISO 639-3: vmy) is spoken by approximately 2,800 people in Southern Central Mexico. [Glottolog: ayau1235]
