New Testament in Mazateco, Ayautla

New Testament in Mazateco, Ayautla (VMYWBT)

Overview

The New Testament in Ayautla Mazatec was published in 2009 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc. and represents the first Scripture translation in this language. [1] Ayautla Mazatec is one of several distinct Mazatecan languages spoken in the Sierra Mazateca region of northern Oaxaca, Mexico. Although often grouped under a single name “Mazatec,” the Mazatecan varieties are not fully mutually intelligible; Ayautla Mazatec has approximately 80% intelligibility with Huautla Mazatec, the prestige variety. [2] A writing system for Ayautla Mazatec was developed with the assistance of SIL linguists Cynthia and Larry Williams. [3] The translation is available in print, digital, and audio formats.
