Overview

An Baraan na Kasuratan is the Samarenyo Meaning-Based Bible, a New Testament translation in the Waray language published in 1984 by the Philippine Bible Society. [1] Also known as the Waray Popular Version, this translation employs a meaning-based (dynamic equivalence) approach to render the New Testament in natural, accessible Waray. [1] Waray is the fifth most-spoken native regional language of the Philippines, native to the Eastern Visayas region. [2] The Philippine Bible Society later initiated a revision of this 1984 edition alongside new translation work for the Northern and Eastern Waray dialects, with work beginning around 2014. [3]

Waray (ISO 639-3: war), also known as Waray-Waray, Lineyte-Samarnon, or Binisaya, is an Austronesian language native to the islands of Samar, eastern Leyte, and Biliran in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines. [2] It is the third most-spoken Bisayan language (after Cebuano and Hiligaynon) with approximately 2.6 million native speakers and a broader ethnolinguistic population of around 4.2 million. [2] [4] The language has approximately 25 dialects and subdialects.
