Wedau Topura Mark (WEDTOP)

Overview

The Gospel of Mark in the Topura dialect of the Wedau language of Papua New Guinea, published in 2010 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc. Wedau has a long history of Christian engagement: in 1891, Anglican priests Rev. Albert Maclaren and Rev. Copland King founded the New Guinea Mission, arriving at Kaieta beach near the village of Wedau and establishing the Dogura mission on a plateau above the village. ^[1] The Wedau variety was adopted by the Anglican missionaries as a lingua franca for the southern coast of Goodenough Bay, and liturgical translations into Wedau were among the earliest missionary linguistic efforts in the region. ^[1] The Topura dialect is one of several varieties of Wedau, alongside Kwamana, Lavora, Wedaun, Wedawan, and Yapoa. ^[2]

Language and People

Wedau (ISO 639-3: wed) is an Oceanic (Austronesian) language spoken by approximately 2,700 people in Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea. ^[2] Topura is one of several dialect names within the Wedau language group. [Glottolog: topu1237]
