Wantoat New Testament (WNCPNG)

Overview

The New Testament and Psalms in the Wantoat language of Papua New Guinea, originally published in 1975 with a revised edition in 2001. [1] The translation was produced by Wycliffe Bible Translators, with SIL linguist Donald R. Davis playing a central role. [2] [3] Davis joined Wycliffe in 1956 and served among the Wantoat people, producing extensive linguistic documentation of the language (including studies of phonology, verb morphology, and clause structure) alongside the translation work during the 1960s and 1970s. [2] [3] After completing the Wantoat New Testament and Psalms, Davis went on to begin SIL’s work in the Solomon Islands. [3] The copyright is held jointly for both the 1975 and 2001 editions by the Bible Society of Papua New Guinea. [1]

Language and People

Wantoat (ISO 639-3: wnc), also known as Taap, is a member of the Finisterre branch of the Trans-New Guinea language family, spoken in the Kalapit district of Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. [2] The language is spoken in villages including Gwabogwat, Mamabam, Matap, Ginonga, and Kupung, with approximately 8,000 speakers reported in 1978. [2] Wantoat has four recognized dialects: Wapu (Leron), Central Wantoat, Bam, and Yagawak (Kandomin). [2] [Glottolog: want1252]
