Usan New Testament (WNUPNG)

Overview

The Qenu Qob Uber is the first edition of the New Testament in the Usan language of Papua New Guinea, published in 2001 by the Bible Society of Papua New Guinea in cooperation with Wycliffe Bible Translators. [1] [2] The translator worked from an initial draft based on various English and Tok Pisin versions, then compared the text against the Nestle Greek text (Novum Testamentum Graece) as the source text. [3] Proper names in the translation follow the conventions of the 1989 Tok Pisin Bible edition, adapted for Usan phonemics and orthography. [3] The preface expresses hope that this first edition would lead to a more accurate revised translation initiated by the Usan Christian community. [3]

Language and People

Usan (ISO 639-3: wnu), also known as Wanuma, is a Papuan language spoken by approximately 1,400 to 1,500 people on the southern slopes of the Adelbert Range in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea. [3] [4] It belongs to the Trans-New Guinea phylum, within the Madang-Adelbert Range sub-phylum and the Northern Adelbert Range subgroup. [4] The village of Wanuma serves as the government and church center for the Usan-speaking area. [3] The language was extensively documented by linguist Ger P. Reesink during SIL fieldwork in the 1970s and 1980s, resulting in a comprehensive grammar published in 1987. [4] The Usan writing system uses a Latin-based orthography developed by SIL International.
