Adilabad Gondi Bible Translation (WSGBSI)

Overview

The Adilabad Gondi Bible Translation is a New Testament published in 2018 in the Adilabad Gondi language, a South-Central Dravidian language spoken in the Adilabad, Karimnagar, and Warangal districts of Telangana state and the Chandrapur, Nanded, and Yavatmal districts of Maharashtra state in India. [1] The translation was produced through a partnership between the Bible Society of India and Wycliffe Bible Translators and is written in the Telugu script (Telu). [2] The Gondi people are one of India’s largest Scheduled Tribe groups, with the broader Gondi language family spoken by approximately three million people across central India, though only about one-fifth of Gonds still speak a Gondi language. [3] Adilabad Gondi (ISO 639-3: wsg) was recognized as a distinct language in 2015 when the former “Southern Gondi” classification was split into Adilabad Gondi and Aheri Gondi. [3]

Language and People

Adilabad Gondi (ISO 639-3: wsg) is spoken by approximately 300,000 people. The Gondi are a Dravidian-speaking tribal people, one of the largest Adivasi (indigenous) groups in India, designated as a Scheduled Tribe across multiple Indian states. [1] Gondi languages belong to the South-Central branch of the Dravidian language family, related distantly to Telugu and other major Dravidian languages. [3] While Gondi has its own historic script, the Gunjala Gondi Lipi, discovered by researchers from the University of Hyderabad and dating to around 1750, Adilabad Gondi is typically written today in the Telugu script. [3]
