Kamula Bible (XLAPNG)

Overview

Genesis, Exodus, Jonah, and the New Testament in the Kamula language of Papua New Guinea. Published in 2005 by the Bible Society of Papua New Guinea, this translation was completed by Wycliffe Bible Translators and represents a major milestone for the small Kamula-speaking community. [1] The translation work benefited from linguistic groundwork by SIL members Ismo and Judith Routamaa, who produced a Kamula phonology description and orthography in the 1990s while based at the SIL center in Ukarumpa. [2] [3] Bible portions in Kamula first appeared between 1996 and 2000, followed by the New Testament completed between 2004 and 2005. [4]

Language and People

Kamula (ISO 639-3: xla), also known as Wawoi, is spoken by approximately 800 to 2,000 people in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea. [2] [4] The language is a Trans-New Guinea language, and is spoken across several villages including the main settlement of Keseki at Wawoi Falls. The villages are extremely remote: the main village is a day’s walk from Samokopa and a seven-day walk from the southernmost village of Wasapea, located 90 kilometers to the south.
