The region of Czechia (Czech Republic) was part of the Kingdom of Bohemia in the Holy Roman Empire before becoming part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After World War I, it formed Czechoslovakia with Slovakia. Following Nazi occupation and communist rule under Soviet influence, it peacefully split from Slovakia in 1993.
