Tonga, officially the Kingdom of Tonga, is a Polynesian country and archipelago consisting of 169 islands, of which 36 are inhabited, located in the South Pacific Ocean. It lies south of Samoa and east of Fiji. Covering a total area of about 747 square kilometers, it has a population of approximately 105,000 people as of 2023. The capital and largest city is Nukuʻalofa, situated on the main island of Tongatapu. The official languages are Tongan and English. Tonga operates as a constitutional monarchy, being the only remaining monarchy in the Pacific. The economy is primarily based on agriculture, fishing, remittances from overseas Tongans, and tourism. Tonga is known for its rich Polynesian culture, traditional ceremonies, and as a destination for whale watching. The country is a member of international organizations such as the United Nations, the Pacific Islands Forum, and the Commonwealth of Nations.
