Switzerland, officially the Swiss Confederation, is a landlocked country situated at the confluence of Western, Central, and Southern Europe. It is bordered by Germany to the north, France to the west, Italy to the south, and Austria and Liechtenstein to the east. Covering an area of approximately 41,290 square kilometers, it has a population of about 8.7 million people as of 2023. The capital city is Bern, while the largest city is Zurich. Switzerland has four official languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh. The country operates as a federal semi-direct democracy under a multi-party system. The economy is highly developed and diverse, with key sectors including finance, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, and tourism. Switzerland is renowned for its political neutrality, high quality of life, and picturesque landscapes, including the Swiss Alps. The country is a member of international organizations such as the United Nations, the European Free Trade Association, and the Schengen Area, but it is not a member of the European Union.
