Micronesia consists of multiple island groups that were historically settled by Austronesian peoples. It was under Spanish, German, and Japanese rule before becoming a U.S. trust territory. It gained independence in 1986 under a Compact of Free Association with the United States, with its economy relying on aid, fishing, and remittances.
The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is an island nation located in the western Pacific Ocean, comprising four states: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae. These states consist of around 607 islands, stretching across the Caroline Islands archipelago. Covering a total land area of approximately 702 square kilometers, FSM has a population of about 115,000 people as of 2023. The capital is Palikir, located on the island of Pohnpei. The official language is English, with indigenous languages such as Chuukese, Pohnpeian, Yapese, and Kosraean also widely spoken. FSM operates as a federal republic in free association with the United States, which provides defense and financial assistance. The economy is based on subsistence farming, fishing, and the receipt of financial aid. FSM is known for its rich marine biodiversity, traditional cultures, and ancient ruins such as Nan Madol. The country is a member of international organizations such as the United Nations and the Pacific Islands Forum.
