Sudan was home to ancient civilizations, including the Kingdom of Kush, before coming under Ottoman and British rule. It gained independence in 1956 but has experienced multiple conflicts, including the Darfur crisis and a civil war that led to South Sudan’s secession in 2011. Sudan, officially the Republic of the Sudan, is a country in Northeast Africa. It shares borders with Egypt to the north, the Red Sea to the northeast, Eritrea and Ethiopia to the east, South Sudan to the south, the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west, and Libya to the northwest. Covering an area of approximately 1.86 million square kilometers, it has a population of about 50 million people as of 2023. The capital and largest city is Khartoum. The official languages are Arabic and English. Sudan operates as a federal provisional government following recent political changes. The economy is diverse, with key sectors including agriculture, mining, and oil production. Sudan is known for its rich cultural heritage, ancient history, and archaeological sites such as the pyramids of Meroë. The country is a member of international organizations such as the United Nations, the African Union, and the Arab League.
