Uruguay, officially the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, is a country in South America, bordered by Argentina to the west, Brazil to the north and northeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast. It is the second-smallest country in South America, covering an area of approximately 176,000 square kilometers, with a population of about 3.5 million people as of 2023. The capital and largest city is Montevideo. The official language is Spanish. Uruguay operates as a unitary presidential constitutional republic.
